About Volunteering
A volunteer is someone who enables an organisation to do things they would not otherwise be able to do by using volunteers to add value and to provide special quality services to others. Volunteering gives people the opportunity to make a contribution to their community and get something back in the process.
Anybody aged 12 and above can volunteer. Volunteering opportunities will vary depending on age.
There are many reasons why you may want to volunteer, any of the following reasons is acceptable and you can have reasons that you may want to discuss with the Volunteers’ Co-ordinator. CLICK HERE to find out what some of the reasons for volunteering could be.
You can help in a variety of ways depending on your own skills, skills you plan to acquire, the amount of time you can spare and the distance you are prepared to travel. CLICK HERE for a more detailed list of possible volunteering opportunities.
When you decide to volunteer you can expect to be invited to an interview with the Volunteers’ Co-ordinator at the Volunteer Centre. CLICK HERE to find out how to obtain an interview. You will need to provide two character references. We will need the name and address of two people that are not related to you and have known you for at least one year. We will write to them.
Once registered, you will be covered by insurance, will be entitled to mileage expenses and other expenses as applicable and will be entitled to supervision as needed. We practice an 'open door' policy and are available at the office or by phone throughout our working hours ( Monday-Friday 9.00 am- 5.00 pm) for support and supervision.
If you accept a placement working with vulnerable adults or children, you may have to undergo a Criminal Record Bureau disclosure.
If you are still undecided and have further questions, call 01284-766126 or e-mail your question/s to vol-coordinator@volunteercentre.co.uk or visit us at 86 Whiting Street, Bury St Edmunds.
